  • Introduction

When Essie (Pinkston) Wynder was 4 years old, she was living in Pensacola Florida with her parents, Charlie and Sallie Pinkston, and her siblings Lillie, Montray, and Lepoleon. Dad Charlie was a laborer on the wharf. By the time Essie was 23, she was married to Clarence Wynder. They were living in Pensacola and had children Clarence Jr., Herbert, Charles, and a cousin, Carrie Selamen, was also living with them. They had been married for four years. Husband Clarence was a butcher in a store. Ten years later, Essie was declaring that she was a widow and living with her mother, Sallie, who was also a widow, in Pensacola. Essie's children Clarence, Jr, Herbert, Doris, and Sallie were living with them. Essie was working as a cook in a private home. Essie Pinkston had married Clarence Wynder around 1926 and they were officially divorced in 1947. By the time that Essie was 43, she was saying that she was divorced and still living in Pensacola, Florida with her children Charlie, Carl, and Sallie; her mother Sallie Pinkston; her niece Ethyl, and nephews Obediah and and Albert. She was working in a private home as a housemaid. The only other person who was working in the home was Charlie, who was a recreation assistant at a public school. Although Essie had "confessed Christ at an early age" and was a devoted member of her church, her marital status seemed to have changed with years, not always reflecting the truth. Whatever the cause, by the time of her death at an advanced age, she was an honored member of her community. Essie R Wynder: Obituary
