Ethel Jency McPherson was born in January 1899 to William McPherson and Nellie Hogan, and had siblings Ellar McPherson, Fred McPherson, Rutherford McPherson, Arnetta McPherson, William McPherson, Pocahontas McPherson, Lue McPherson, and Fred McPherson. She married Omar Donothan, and had children Infant Donothan, Monroe Donothan, Fred Donothan, and Leonard Donothan. Ethel McPherson died at age 56 years old on January 3, 1956.

In 1899, in the year that Ethel McPherson was born, on February 4th, the Philippine–American War began. The Philippines objected to the Treaty of Paris, signed in 1898, that transferred possession of the Philippines from Spain to the U.S. Filipinos began a fight for independence and fighting between U.S. forces and those of the Philippine Republic broke out. On June 2nd, the Philippines officially declared war on the United States.

In 1911, at the age of just 12 years old, Ethel was alive when Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen became the first man to reach the South Pole, along with four fellow Norwegian explorers. After hearing that Peary had beaten him to the North Pole, Amundsen decided to tackle the South Pole. On December 14th, he succeeded.
