At Finch, a friend arranged a blind date and introduced her to husband Eugene Richard Schwabach (Yale '39). It was "Love at first Sight", and they married in 1943. Helaine was "a war-time bride", and later raised their family of five boys in Larchmont, New York. She was a devoted mother to her children and as they grew she was interested in broadening her horizons through education. She applied to the Sarah Lawrence College for a first of its kind program promoting higher education for returning adult women. Helaine saw her time at Sarah Lawrence as a turning point in her life, studying with eminent teachers such as Joseph Campbell. It was here that sparked a lifelong love for learning. Earning a Bachelor's degree in 1968, she later went on to complete a Masters in Social Work at Fordham University. Becoming a Licensed Social Worker, in her second career, Helaine worked for Child Protective Services in Westchester County, NY. After retiring from the County, she worked as a support counselor for cancer patients at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital in Manhattan. During her counseling years she developed an interest in Carl Jung and in retirement, Helaine was an active member of the Jung Society in Sarasota.
