Florence Theresa Holland Berry of Albert Park, Port Phillip City County, VIC Australia was born on October 7, 1877 in Port Melbourne to Eliza Margaret (Lonsdale) Berry and Thomas Slocombe Berry. She had siblings Ada Elizabeth Berry, Evelyn Maud Berry, Albert Thomas Berry, George Slocombe Berry, William Thomas Berry, and Eliza Jane Berry. She married William George Holland in 1911, and had children Sylvia Florence Holland and Alma Maude Holland. Florence Berry died at age 95 years old in 1972 in Albert Park.

In 1877, in the year that Florence Theresa Berry was born, on March 2nd, the U.S. presidential election of 1876 was ended with the selection of Rutherford B. Hayes as the winner. Samuel J. Tilden had won the popular vote in November 1876 but 20 votes in the electoral college were in dispute. An informal agreement was made in which Hayes agreed to remove federal troops from South Carolina, Florida, and Louisiana, ending Reconstruction in the South. So, on March 4th, Rutherford B. Hayes became the 19th President of the United States.

In 1941, she was 64 years old when on December 7th, the Japanese attacked the military base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The surprise aerial attack damaged 8 U.S. battleships (6 later returned to service), including the USS Arizona, and destroyed 188 aircraft. 2,402 American citizens died and 1,178 wounded were wounded. On December 8th, the U.S. declared war on Japan and on December 11th, Germany and Italy (allies of Japan) declared war on the United States. World War II was in full swing.
