Frances Lorine (Goetsch) Schwantz was born on February 28, 1877 in Watertown, Wisconsin United States to Henry William Goetsch and Johanne Louisa Magdalene (Deutschle) Goetsch, and had siblings Gustaf Adolf Goetsch, Alice Josephine (Goetsch) Fuller, Edwin Hugo Goetsch, Harriet Louise (Goetsch) Smith, and Edith Verne (Goetsch) Blackwell. She was in a relationship with Theodore Frank Schwantz, and had children Francis Walter Swantz and Ralph Willard Stevens. Frances Schwantz died at age 91 years old on December 22, 1968 in Pasadena, CA.

Frances's mother, Johanne Louisa Magdalene Deutschle (1845-1898) was born in Württemberg, Germany to Johann Georg Deuschle (1820-1901) and Magdalene Benz (1818-1876) and immigrated to North America in May 1858. Her father Henry William Goetsch (1845-1901) was born in Lebanon, Wisconsin to Wilhelm Friedrich August Goetsch (1820-1902) and Charlotte Marie Dorothea Liermann (1819-1899), who had married in Pommern, Rheinland-Pfalz, Prussia in 1843 and immigrated to the United States in 1845.

Frances was born in Watertown, Wisconsin, the fifth of six children of Johanne Louisa Magdalene Deutschle (1845-1898) and Henry William (Henrich Wilhelm) Goetsch (1845-1901). Her eldest brother, Gustaf Adolf Goetsch (1869-1927), and eldest sister, Alice Josephine Goetsch (1870-1938) both attended medical school at the University of Chicago.

Frances graduated from Watertown High School in 1894 and began working as Watertown's second grade teacher at age 21. Her mother died that same year, and three years later, her father died. Because Frances's younger sister Edith was only 12 years old at the time, Edith lived with Frances and her husband Theodore.
