Frances Virginia (Herpich) Dittmeyer was born on November 18, 1907 to Eva Wilhelmine (Bruckner) Herpich and John Adam Herpich, and had siblings Gertrude A (Herpich) Smithson, Harold Calvin Herpich, Orlando John Herpich, Leodore Walter Herpich, Mildred Lucille (Herpich) Papenhaus, Russell Louis Herpich, Kenneth Wayne Herpich, J Maxine (Herpich) Lapham, and Joyce Elaine (Herpich) Kemble. She married Chester Leroy Dittmeyer on January 29, 1943, and died at age 97 years old on June 3, 2005. Frances Dittmeyer was buried circa June 5, 2005 at Delavan Cemetery in Delavan, Morris Co County, Ks.

In 1907, in the year that Frances Virginia (Herpich) Dittmeyer was born, the Monongah coal mining disaster occurred on December 6th, happening at the Fairmont Coal Company’s No. 6 and No. 8 mines.. Over 361 miners were killed. Because there was no breathing apparatus at the time to help rescuers, recovery efforts were greatly hampered. It is considered the worst mining disaster in American history and led to government oversight in mining practices.
