Francis Sargent Newell was born in Victoria to Andrew Newell and Frances Colgate (Lord) Newell, and had siblings Albert Henry Newell, Frederic Lord Newell, Edward Williams Newell, Clinton Newell, Harriet Grace Newell, Eva Helen (Newell) Fuller, Walter Colgate Newell, Andrew Valentine Newell, and Abbie Marie (Newell) Thwaites. He married Alice (Waterhouse) Newell, and had children Andrew Brough Newell, Lucy Colgate Newell, Geoffrey Francis Newell, James Waterhouse Newell, Edward Sargent Newell, and Mary Midgley Newell. Francis Newell died in 1967, and was buried at Chewton Cemetery in Chewton, Mount Alexander Shire County, VIC Australia.

  • Introduction

    The Mount Alexander Mail. 3 April 1900. 4TH BATTALION INFANTRY BRIGADE. Captain Francis Sargent Newell joined the Metropolitan Company of senior cadets at East Melbourne 1890. and was appointed Lieutenant and assumed command of the Company on 27th March 1893. On the 8th October 1897 he was transferred to the Fourth Battalion at Castlemaine. The Bendigo Independent, 10 August 1914. CASTLEMAINE. The old members of the local militia held a meeting on Friday night and formed an association called the Castlemaine Old Soldiers Association. A strong commitee was elected, consisting of Lieut. Col. Field, president; vice-presidents, Lieut. Colonels Newell and *Gartside and Captain Thwaites....... *( Robert Gartside - wounded Boer War - K.I.A. Gallipoli ). The Australasian, Melbourne. 22 February 1941. VICTORIAN REGIMENTS. The 32nd is young but efficient.... When Australia's young men were called on to undergo regular instruction in the art of war- fare, recruits from Footscray and Yarraville were attached to the 66th ( Mount Alexander ) Battalion as E anf F Companies. The battalion had its headquarters at Castlemaine and was commanded by Lieut.-Colonel F. S. Newell, V.D., now a Collins- street Solicitor. Colonel Newell who retired from the active list in 1913, is still an honarary member of the mess at the 32nd. He recalled last week that in 1912 Footscray had neither drill hall nor any facilities for training or administration. Drills were carried out in the street, "There were no cars speeding along the roads at 80 miles an hour in those days."
