He had siblings Maria Jane (Funcke) Loats, Alice Louise Funcke Perks, Ernest August Funcke, Bertha Funcke Trotter, George Valentine Funcke, Isabella Charlotte Funcke, John Valentine Funcke, Emma Funcke, Sophia Caroline (Funcke) Coates, and William Valentine Funcke. He married Catherine Riley Funcke, and had children Ernest Frederick Funcke and James Valentine Funcke. Frederick Funcke died at age 33 years old on July 24, 1910 in Ararat.

In 1877, in the year that Frederick Funcke was born, on January 8th, the Battle of Wolf Mountain occurred in southern Montana Territory. Crazy Horse, Two Moon, and their warriors fought the United States Cavalry. The battle was a tactical draw and by May, Crazy Horse and his followers had surrendered at Camp Robinson.
