She had siblings Maria Jane (Funcke) Loats, Alice Louise Funcke Perks, Ernest August Funcke, Bertha Funcke Trotter, George Valentine Funcke, Isabella Charlotte Funcke, John Valentine Funcke, Emma Funcke, Frederick Funcke, and William Valentine Funcke. She married George Stillman Coates in 1872, and had children Anne Louisa Coates, Alice Mary (Coates) Cook, William Newstead Coates, and James Albert Coates. Sophia Coates died at age 85 years old on January 14, 1941 at Anderson St, in Horsham, VIC.

In 1855, in the year that Sophia Caroline (Funcke) Coates was born, on March 3rd, Congress appropriated $30,000 to create the U.S. Camel Corps. The idea was to use camels as pack animals in the Southwest and 34 camels were bought. But the Army wasn't enthusiastic about the idea and after the Civil War the Camel Corps was entirely abandoned.
