Frederick James Wheelhouse of Kyabram, VIC Australia was born on April 2, 1902 in Wehla, Loddon Shire County to Leah Harriet (Crombie) Wheelhouse and Mortimer Clayton Wheelhouse. He had siblings Leslie Francis Mortimer Wheelhouse, Ethel May Wheelhouse, Clarence Oswald Wheelhouse, Gladys Hazel Wheelhouse, Myrtle Hilda Victoria Wheelhouse, and Ellen Percy Wheelhouse. He married Doris May Humphries in 1929, and had children Pamela May Wheelhouse and Frederick Mortim Wheelhouse. Frederick Wheelhouse died at age 67 years old on July 31, 1969 in Kyabram.

In 1902, in the year that Frederick James Wheelhouse was born, the first Rose Bowl game was played in Pasadena, California. Called the "Tournament East–West football game" at the time, the Michigan Wolverines (East) played the Stanford Indians (West) - the Wolverines won 49 - 0. (The Stanford captain requested an end to the game with 8 minutes remaining.) The Tournament of Roses Parade began in 1890 and the football game began as a way to boost tourism in the area.

In June, she had been part of a 3 man crew that flew the Atlantic Ocean but since she had no instrument training, she couldn't fly the plane - she kept the flight log. The North American flight became one of her many "firsts" as a female pilot.
