He married Emily Littlejohn Storey in 1898, and had children Harold Henry Storey, Vera May Storey, Alma Jane Storey, and Freda Evelyn Storey. Frederick Storey died at age 72 years old on December 2, 1947 in Hampton.

In 1875, in the year that Frederick John Storey was born, on March 1st, Congress passed the Civil Rights Act. The Act prohibited racial discrimination in both public accommodations and jury duty. Opposed by the public, the "public accommodations" sections of the Act were overturned by the Supreme Court eight years later.

In 1909, he was 34 years old when explorer Robert Peary, a Rear Admiral in the U.S. Navy, claimed to have been the first to have reached the geographic North Pole. His claim has been disputed for over a century - some say that he ended up 60 miles from the North Pole. Peary was the only navigator on his team and he didn't submit his records for public review.
