Fritz Pütter (* 14 January 1895 in Karthaus near Dülmen; † 10 August 1918 in Bonn) was a Prussian officer of the Fliegertruppe and achieved 25 confirmed kills in the First World War. Fritz was the son of the royal rentmaster Franz Pütter. He attended the municipal Realgymnasium in Münster and subsequently studied chemistry at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster. During World War I, Pütter joined MG Ersatz-Kompanie 13 in Münster as a volunteer on August 24, 1914, where he served on the Eastern Front until May 1915. After finishing officer's school, he was transferred to Infantry Regiment No. 370 on October 12, 1915, and participated with it in the fighting near Flirey and in Priesterwald. On May 20, 1916, Pütter reported to Graudenz to join the Flieger-Ersatz-Abteilung 8, where he trained as an airplane pilot. He then returned to the Western Front on December 9, 1916, as an airplane pilot with Flieger-Abteilung A 251 (3rd Army) and was assigned as a reconnaissance pilot between Reims and Verdun until March 7, 1917, when he was assigned to Jasta 9. On February 3, 1918, after ten kills, he was appointed leader of Jasta 68, newly formed for the German Spring Offensive. His area of operations was the area of Cambrai, Montdidier, and finally Reims. In the very first days of the offensive he shot down one balloon and four planes. After 22 air victories, including eight captive balloons, he was awarded the highest Prussian decoration for bravery, the Order Pour le Mérite, by A.K.O. on May 31, 1918. Previously, Pütter had already been awarded both classes of the Iron Cross as well as the Knight's Cross of the Royal House Order of Hohenzollern with Swords. On July 16, 1918, he crashed over Reims after his plane caught fire as a result of spontaneous combustion of incendiary ammunition. Pütter died on August 10, 1918 in the university hospital in Bonn due to the severe burn injuries. He was buried in Münster at the central cemetery. Source: Wikipedia.de Translated with Deepl
