  • Introduction

    George was one of approx 400 convicts transported to Australia on the barque "Moffatt" in 1836. ( stole some bacon ) The ship was nearly wrecked when a storm blew up near Sydney heads while waiting for a pilot. The Australian, Sydney. 14th June 1836. The Lord's of the Admiralty have chartered the "Moffat," for the conveyance of 400 male convicts to New South Wales, and the "Lord Lynedoch," to carry 330 male convicts to Van Diemen's Land. The Sydney Herald. 20th October 1836. The whole of the prisoners by the "Moffat" and "Waterloo," have been assigned to private service, and the greater portion of them assigned to the interior. Fifty of the men by the "Moffat," have been assigned to the Australian Agricultural Company, pursuant to Lord Glenelg's instructions. George married 1853 Elizabeth Grey, Pentridge, Victoria.

In 1815, in the year that George Alexander Croucher was born, on January 18th, the Battle of New Orleans ended. General Andrew Jackson defeated a much larger invading British force in the last major battle of the War of 1812. This was after the Treaty of Ghent - signed the previous December - ended the war. But the news didn't reach the U.S. until February and the Treaty was ratified by Congress the same month. So the battle had no impact on the war.

In 1841, by the time he was 26 years old, on August 16th, President John Tyler vetoed a bill to re-establish the Second Bank of the United States - America's Central Bank. President Jackson had previously dissolved the bank and Tyler's veto angered the Whig Party (his own party). Rioters gathered outside the White House and burned Tyler in effigy, threw stones at the White House, and fired guns. It may have been the most violent demonstration on White House grounds in U.S. history.
