George Charles Avery of Port Albert, Wellington Shire County, VIC Australia was born on July 23, 1857 in Port Albert to John Avery and Mary Ann "Annie" (Sandy) Avery. He had siblings Elizabeth Avery Neil, William Avery, Joseph Sandy Avery, Mary Ann "Annie" Avery, Catherine Avery MacPherson, Grace Christina (Avery) Robinson, Henry Avery, John Avery, James Avery, and Edward Forman Avery. He married Annie Hiho Avery in 1885, and had children George Richard St John Avery, Catherine Ada Avery, Angus William Charles Avery, Neil Richard Duncan Avery, and John Avery. George Avery died at age 77 years old on February 8, 1935 in Port Albert.

In 1857, in the year that George Charles Avery was born, on March 4th, James Buchanan became the 15th President of the United States. Called a "doughface" by many - a Northerner with Southern sympathies - he said that he would only serve one term and he did what he said.

In 1866, he was just 9 years old when on May 10th, the "banker's bank" - London bank Overend, Gurney and Company - collapsed, beginning the Panic of 1866. Unemployment went up to 8% and wages went down. Only about 16% of joint-stock companies - a company whose stock is owned jointly by the shareholders - weathered the Panic.
