George Dawkin c. 1832 - 1902

George Dawkin of Richmond, City of Yarra County, VIC Australia was born circa 1832. He was married to Sarah Oliver Dawkin in 1865, and had children Edward Franklyn Dawkin, George William Dawkin, Oliva Sydney Dawkin, Frank Wilkinson Dawkin, Ada Margaret (Dawkin) Raftis, Alice Mary Ann Coleman, and Elizabeth May (Dawkin) Fallu. George Dawkin died at age 70 years old in 1902 in Richmond.

In 1832, in the year that George Dawkin was born, by February 12th, a cholera epidemic in London claimed at least 3,000 lives - it eventually killed 6,536. The epidemic spread to France and North America later in the year. Cholera is spread through contaminated food and water but at the time, it was thought to be spread by a "miasma” - a bad smell - in the air.

In 1844, by the time he was merely 12 years old, in June and July, the "Great Flood of 1844" occurred on the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers - the largest flood recorded in that area. The population in the area was sparse at the time, though, so the flood didn't have a lot of economic impact. The biggest loss was to the Wyandot Indians - 100 people died from diseases caused by the flood.
