  • Introduction

George Frederick Kneller was born on August 30, 1908 in ldham, Lancashire, England. He is the son of John William Kneller (1886-1929) and Margaret Ann Truslove (1886-1973). He had siblings Leonard (1910-1964), Bernard (1911-1964), and John William Kneller (1916-2009). Dr. Kneller was a tour organizer of tours to Europe from approximately 1954 to 1959, but he may have started his tours before then. The tour was known as the Kneller Tour. The itinerary was very extensive and covered about 14 countries with stays in about 22 first class hotels. In 1957 I (Svend Hartmann) was invited to join Dr. Kneller in London for his trip back to UCLA where I assisted with typing the manuscript to his book: the Philosophy of Education. About 30 years later I had the pleasure of visiting Dr. Kneller with my wife and three children at his beautiful house on 372 Hilgard Avenue near the UCLA campus.

3 Memories, Stories & Photos about George

George never married. He lived across the street from the UCLA campus, accompanied by UCLA athletes awarded housing in his home. Rob Pendelton was his full-time assistant, and John Harrison was his documentary researcher. He profited from the "Kneller Tours," and stock market gains, enabling him to finance a variety of grants, including faculty chairs and even a massive air conditioner for the UCLA Faculty Center. He continued writing missives to his colleagues long after mandatory retirement. His themes were critical of educational psychology, the status of education as a unique discipline, and the value of philosophical inquiry.

My UCLA Mentor and Friend
George Kneller invited me to serve as his teaching assistant in 1972, and served as mentor and co-author until award of Ph.D. in 1976, having nominated me to receive the award "For Distinguished Service" as the "Most Outstanding Graduate" of the UCLA Graduate School of Education for that year. George subsequently guided my writing and publication, over two decades, of "The Educational Technology Handbook: Process and Products for Learning." George also funded and hosted, on the Queen Mary II, the annual meeting of the Far Western Philosophy of Education Society the year I served as President. When I moved to New York to pursue a career in teaching, George offered to fund a faculty position for me at UCLA. Instead, I earned a master's degree at NYU and qualified to become a computer specialist teacher at P.S. 6, Manhattan.
