George Goodes of Portland, Glenelg Shire County, VIC Australia was born circa 1896 in Sandford to David Goodes and Sarah Ellen (Hannaford) Goodes. He had siblings Sarah Elizabeth (Goodes) Jones, Esther Victoria (Goodes) Shepherd, William Hannaford Goodes, David Frances Goodes, Ruby Beatrice Goodes, Annie Goodes Jones, and James Richard Goodes. George Goodes married Hilda Ann Anderson, and died at age 83 years old on October 12, 1980 in Portland.

In 1918, at the age of 22 years old, George was alive when on November 11th, an armistice was signed between the Allies and Germany, ending the fighting on the Western Front in World War I. This meant a complete defeat of Germany although Germany never formally surrendered. It took another six months of negotiations to sign an actual peace treaty between the warring parties.
