  • Introduction

    George was born on the lower eastside of Manhattan. He dropped out of Seward Park High School to join the Navy during WWII. He was stationed in the Philippines for 18 months, during which time he contracted malaria. On his return to the States, he took a job in the garment industry where he met his future wife, Ida. They were married in June of 1951 and had a son, Raymond, in 1953. George eventually worked for the United States Postal Service in New York City. He died in 1972 after a prolonged battle with lung cancer.

In 1927, in the year that George Goydon was born, the first "talkie" (a movie with music, songs, and talking), The Jazz Singer, was released. Al Jolson starred as a cantor's son who instead of following in his father's footsteps as expected, becomes a singer of popular songs. Banished by his father, they reconcile on his father's deathbed. It was a tear-jerker and audiences went wild - especially when they heard the songs. Thus begun the demise of silent films and the rise of "talkies".

In 1946, George was 19 years old when pediatrician Dr. Benjamin Spock's book "The Common Sense Book of Baby and Child Care" was published. It sold half a million copies in the first six months. Aside from the Bible, it became the best selling book of the 20th century. A generation of Baby Boomers were raised by the advice of Dr. Spock.
