In 1818, when he was 21 years old, on October 20th, the Treaty of 1818 - between the U.S. and the United Kingdom - established the boundary between the U.S. and British North America as the 49th parallel north. The treaty also allowed for joint occupation and settlement of the "Oregon Country" - known currently as the Pacific Northwest of the United States and British Columbia in Canada.

In 1827, he was 30 years old when on May 25th, Romanian inventor Petrache Poenaru received a French patent for the invention of the first fountain pen with a replaceable ink cartridge. The fountain pen would make inkwells obsolete. Poenaru's patent used a barrel made from a large swan quill (part of the feather).
