In 1919, in the year that George Lederman was born, in January, Nebraska was the 36th state to ratify the 18th Amendment, making it the law of the land. The 18th Amendment established Prohibition - a law against the production, transport, and sale of alcohol. Private consumption and possession were not prohibited. Several months later, the Volstead Act was passed, creating laws to enforce the Amendment. Bootlegging and bathtub gin followed.

In 1939, George was 20 years old when on the 1st of September, Nazi Germany invaded Poland. On September 17th, the Soviet Union invaded Poland as well. Poland expected help from France and the United Kingdom, since they had a pact with both. But no help came. By October 6th, the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany held full control of the previously Polish lands. Eventually, the invasion of Poland lead to World War II.

On November 11th, Veteran's Day, we celebrate the service of military veterans in the United States. Remember those brave men and women who fought for our country with this collection of powerful images that capture times of war and strife. Armistice Day, the ending of World War I, was celebrated for decades. The armistice began on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918. In the United States, the day was renamed Veterans Day in 1954 but it's still celebrated on November 11th. Memorial Day was set aside to celebrate those who died in war but Veterans Day honors all of those who have served in the military.
