George Schmidt 1872 - 1943

George Schmidt of VIC Australia was born in 1872 in Sandhurst, City of Frankston County. He was married to Mary Ellen (Hocking) Schmidt in 1902, and had children Raymond George Schmidt, Edgar Schmidt, Dorothy Grace Schmidt, Norman Schmidt, and Harold Gordon Schmidt. George Schmidt died at age 71 years old in 1943.

In 1872, in the year that George Schmidt was born, on May 22nd, President Ulysses S. Grant signed the Amnesty Act of 1872. The Act restored full civil rights to secessionists, including about 150,000 former slaves who had fought in the Confederate Army. About 500 former Confederate sympathizers were not allowed their full civil rights.
