George’s parents were Marie (Smickle) Dillon and James Lincoln Dillon. George was the middle child of 3 boys, James Lincoln Dillon, the eldest, and John Patrick Dillon (best known as Pat), the baby. George was originally named George Smith Dillon but his grandma Theresa Smith Smickle loved the name Washington so the family legally dropped the Smith and changed it to Washington. George is a thoughtful, caring, and loving individual who enjoys being around people. He is empathetic and believes in the equality and goodness of his fellow man. In many ways he is Quixotic. He has a great sense of humor and enjoys sharing his humor with others.

George’s mother was born as either Marie or Minerva Smickle. It is believed she was born in San Francisco on March 22, 1909 but spent her early years in Paloma (Calaveras County), California. Her parents were Theresa Smith and George Smickle. Theresa Smith was the daughter of Grace Breslin and Pathuel Smith (who served in the Union Army during the Civil War guarding the gold fields around Mokolueme Hill). George’s mothers family were a blend. His grandfather is believed to have been born in LaCrosse, Wisconsin of Prussian heritage. His grandmother, a blend of Irish and English background. George’s father was James Lincoln Dillon, son of Irish immigrants to California. George’s father died an early death from cancer at age 48, when George was only 16.

George was born and raised in San Francisco and lived in the city until he moved to Fremont, California for his first job in 1965.
Early Life & Education

George attended Catholic schools in San Francisco, Ca. His elementary school was Holy Names and his high school was Riordan. He obtained a BA in Social Science from San Francisco State in 1963 and received a Master’ Degree from California State University in Hayward circa 1996.
Religious Beliefs

George attended Catholic schools through high school. Currently he feels that nothing he learned in Catholic school was true and currently he does not believe in an afterlife.
Military Service

George did not serve in the military due to exemptions, at the time, due to young children and exemptions due to job status.
Professional Career

Although for a time he worked as a paperboy, for the Fish and Games Department, for the San Francisco library, as a valet at the San Francisco airport, and for the U.S. postal Service, he worked for 34 years in the Fremont Unified School District. His first 3 years were at Walters Jr. High School followed by 31 years at Mission San Jose High School where he taught Government and Economics, U.S. History, and Psychology (18 years). He also served as Department Chairman of the Social Science Department and golf coach. He supplemented his early years of teaching with work at Weibel Winery in the tasting room.
Personal Life & Family

George was married twice. His first marriage was to Claire McDonald in 1964. The marriage produced two wonderful children, Suzanne Marie Dillon (now Hopkins) and Scott Mathew Dillon. His first marriage ended in 1977. His second and current marriage is to Judy Joy (Salinero) Dillon which took place in 1977. He is the proud grandfather to his daughter’s only child, Isabella Claire. While teaching George was active in the teachers union in his school district, serving as chief negotiator. He loved teaching and the students he worked with. George is an avid reader having recently achieved reading more than 1 million pages of completed books. He currently enjoys playing a full round of golf 3 times a week while chipping, putting and practicing on other days. Following his retirement from teaching he became actively involved with art. He has belonged to galleries in Danville, Sutter Creek, San Andreas and Lodi. His art is eclectic and incredibly colorful. He has done watercolor, mixed media, oil and especially in acrylic and has successfully sold many. George served for 7 years as an officer of Senior Golf at La Contenta Golf Course. Once retired he became the writer of senior golf news to the two local newspapers. George loves to travel. In his earlier years traveling and camping in his VW pop top proved both adventurous and enjoyable. His second marriage took him across country to Nova Scotia. Later trips took him and Judy on the Alcan highway to Alaska, to many national parks and to more than half the states in the union. Later he enjoyed travel to all 7 continents and more than 100 countries around the world.
