  • Obituary

George William Urrey died May 8, 2005, at Tillamook County General Hospital at the age of 83. He was born in Malakoff, Texas, Oct. 5, 1921, to Blanche Dunton Urrey and George W. Urrey Sr. George attended school in Malokoff and graduated from Malakoff High, where he played football and tennis. After graduation, George eagerly enlisted in the National Guard and his unit was soon called up. Blanche Urrey, pointed out that George was not yet old enough to enlist without consent and, with the aid of her local senator, retrieved young George from the hands of the military. Not one to give up easily, George enlisted in the U.S. Army several months later when he reached the acceptable age. He served with the 137th Army Airways Communication Division and the 767th Army Air Forces Base Unit. During his service as a radio operator, he was awarded more than a few decorations, including a Good Conduct Medal and two overseas stripes. Also during his service he served in many places, including Texas, California, Arizona, Georgia and Greenland. George achieved the rank of sergeant and was honorably discharged from military service Dec. 3, 1945. After completing his military service, George accepted an agent telegrapher position with Southern Pacific Railroad in 1946 and moved to Drain, where he began his 39-year career with the railroad. In Drain, George caught the eye of a petite redhead from the Miller family and soon was courting Janice Marie Miller. They married Sept. 7, 1946, in Eugene, and spent the next 59 years together. During his tenure with the railroad, George worked as an agent at various stations in Oregon, including Drain, Cochran, Crescent Lake, Swisshome and Tillamook, until the station closed in 1982, and then Chemult until retirement from the Southern Pacific in 1986, when he returned to his home in Tillamook to enjoy retirement. George and Janice moved to Tillamook in 1961 with their three children, George (Skip), Patty and Sandy. George was a gentle, patient, loving family man throughout his life. He often surprised his family with his quick wit, finding humor and laughter everywhere. George in his quiet, selfless way often lent a helping hand to friends and family whenever he saw a need he could fulfill or a problem he could fix. His benevolent spirit has left an emptiness inside all who knew and loved him. He is survived by his wife, Janice Marie Urrey; children, George (Skip) Urrey and wife Susan (Donahue) of Tillamook; Patricia Urrey Young and husband Clifford of Beaverton, and Sandra Urrey Sause and husband Gary of Beavercreek; grandchildren, Rick Young and wife Kassandra, Scott Young and wife Brandi, Beaudre Sause, Dana Urrey, Tricia Urrey, and Benjamin Urrey; his great-grandchildren: Kasey and Robert Young, Jayden Young, and Samantha Sause. At his request no services will be held. George will be placed to rest in the Miller family cemetery in Leona. Headlight-Herald, May 18, 2005
