George William Urrey Jr was born on October 5, 1921, in Malakoff, Texas to Blanche Dunton Urrey (1886-1970) and George W. Urrey Sr. (1862-1939). George was a proud graduate of Malakoff High School, where he excelled in sports such as football and tennis. He had a strong sense of duty and eagerly enlisted in the National Guard after graduation, but was later retrieved by his mother due to his young age. However, George refused to give up and eventually enlisted in the U.S. Army several months later, where he served with distinction and honor.
George served with the 137th Army Airways Communication Division and the 767th Army Air Forces Base Unit as a radio operator. During his military service, he was awarded several decorations, including a Good Conduct Medal and two overseas stripes. He was stationed in various locations across the United States, including Texas, California, Arizona, Georgia, and Greenland. George achieved the rank of sergeant and was honorably discharged from military service on December 3, 1945.
After his military service, George accepted an agent telegrapher position with Southern Pacific Railroad in 1946 and started a 39-year career with the company. He met and married the love of his life, Janice Marie Miller, in 1946 and they enjoyed 59 years of marriage together. They moved to Tillamook, Oregon in 1961 with their three children, George (Skip), Patty, and Sandy. George was a devoted family man who had a great sense of humor and was always there to lend a helping hand.
George passed away on May 8, 2005, at the age of 83, leaving behind a loving family and a community who cherished his kind spirit. As per his wishes, there were no services held, and he was buried in the Miller family cemetery in Leona.
