Gertrude was born into a cultured, politically liberal, affluent Jewish-immigrant family. She was an intelligent, cultured, and highly literate woman, an inveterate reader. She, like her two sisters, married young as was the custom. Her youthful marriage was not a happy or appropriate one, which she quickly understood, and soon after the marriage, she spent a year (during the 1920's)touring Europe, When she returned she settled into her difficult marriage and had two children, Johanna (now deceased), the younger, and Bruce, the oldest--now (as of 2020) retired after a highly successful career as an engineer. In her late forties she finally divorced her husband, ultimately remarrying Joshua Lowenfish, after sustained years of a live-in relationship. Josh was a cultured but not very pleasant man, pompous and defensive, but Gertrude adjusted reasonably well until he ultimately predeceased her. She lived on for another deceased, a relatively wealthy woman. Gertrude was a proficient and enthusiastic pianist. She loved playing Mozart, Beethoven, and Chopin. In later years she treated herself to a Steinway She continued playing, for her own enjoyment, until her late eighties, when her hearing decreased and her fingers lost their nimbleness. After her husband died, she moved to southern Florida, where she lived in a lovely, sprawling condominium where I, her nephew, would visit her during my Christmas vacation. She kindly built a well-furnished back porch upon my request, in which I was happy to read and drink my morning coffee. She left me and my siblings quite small inheritances, considering her affluence and that of her two children. Still, I remember her with much fondness and affection and accepted such money as she left me with gratitude.
