Smith, age 3 Waller (sic) is listed as a "Secretary & Treasurer" Gertrude does "House Keeping" In the 1920 federal census, Gertrude is listed as living with "Walter" (sic), husband, age 41. She is age 37, Jessie is 8, Clayton is 7. Also in the household is Eugene Ellis, age 40, a boarder. Everyone but the boarder was born in New York. Gertrude's father was born in England and her mother was born in New York. Walter was working as a shipping clerk at a medicine company. Gertrude wasn't employeed

In 1882, in the year that Gertrude Smith was born, on September 4th, the switch to the first commercial electrical power plant in the U.S. - at 255-257 Pearl Street - was flipped by Thomas Edison. It lit one square mile of lower Manhattan and was powered by coal. The "electrical age" had begun.

In 1903, at the age of 21 years old, Gertrude was alive when the Ford Motor Company was incorporated in June after Henry Ford left another car company he founded in 1901 (which became the Cadillac Motor Company). He began Ford Motor Company with $28,000 in cash from twelve investors, two of whom (the Dodge brothers) later began their own car company. Henry Ford improved on assembly line techniques and has been so successful that his family still controls a very popular Ford line of cars and trucks.
