Paul was a mechanical engineer and worked for the government following his military service. He lived all over New Mexico. His hobby was racing sprint cars. Primarily at Speedway Park and Albuquerque Raceway in the 1960s. He retired from racing in the early 1970s when he opened an auto parts store in Socorro. In 1974 he moved the store to his hometown of Clovis, New Mexico. He also opened a store in Portales, New Mexico in 1976. It was during his commute from Portales to Clovis on the May 19, 1979 that he was critically injured in a car accident. He never recovered, suffering permanent brain damage. He survived for almost 10 years prior to his death at a Nursing Facility in Silver City.
