Paul was a mechanical engineer and worked for the government following his military service. He lived all over New Mexico. His hobby was racing sprint cars. Primarily at Speedway Park and Albuquerque Raceway in the 1960s. He retired from racing in the early 1970s when he opened an auto parts store in Socorro. In 1974 he moved the store to his hometown of Clovis, New Mexico. He also opened a store in Portales, New Mexico in 1976. It was during his commute from Portales to Clovis on the May 19, 1979 that he was critically injured in a car accident. He never recovered, suffering permanent brain damage. He survived for almost 10 years prior to his death at a Nursing Facility in Silver City.

In 1932, in the year that Gilbert Paul Clark was born, five years to the day after Lindbergh crossed the Atlantic, Amelia Earhart flew solo from Newfoundland to Ireland, the first woman to cross the Atlantic solo and the first to replicate Lindbergh's feat. She flew over 2,000 miles in just under 15 hours.

In 1959, he was 27 years old when on January 3rd, Alaska became the 49th state of the United States and the first state not a part of the contiguous United States. The flag was changed to display 49 stars.

In 1968, at the age of 36 years old, Gilbert was alive when on April 4th, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the civil rights leader, was shot and killed by an assassin in Memphis. James Earl Ray was apprehended and plead guilty to shooting Dr. King. Ray died in jail in 1998.

In 1975, when he was 43 years old, on September 5th, Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme tried to assassinate President Ford in Sacramento, California. She failed when her gun wouldn't fire. President Ford escaped a second assassination attempt 17 days later on September 22 when Sarah Jane Moore tried to shoot him in San Francisco. A bystander saw her raise her arm, grabbed it, and the shot went wild.

In 1989, in the year of Gilbert Paul Clark's passing, on January 20th, George Herbert Walker Bush became the 41st President of the United States. Previously Ronald Regan's Vice President, he ran against Michael Dukakis and won the popular vote by 53.4% to 45.6%.
