    New London - Harlie O. Martin, 87, of 546 Ocean Ave., passed away Wednesday, May 25, 2011, at his home. Harlie was born on Jan. 17, 1924, in Gray, Ky., to the late Hugh and Eliza (Collins) Martin. He was the youngest of 11 children, several of whom died at childbirth. He was predeceased by his sisters, Easter, Pearl and Beatrice; and brothers, Luke and Rad. He was also predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Alice (Haddad) Martin, whom he married on Nov. 19, 1944. He enlisted in the Navy during World War II, serving with the Navy Seabees in both the European and Asian Theaters. He participated in the Normandy Invasion and the Battle for Okinawa. After being honorably discharged, he settled in New London with his wife and her family, working in the family grocery store and at Electric Boat. He then worked for many years for the City of New London as an electrician, and was later promoted to city electrical inspector, retiring in the late 1980's, after which he and Alice wintered in Deerfield Beach, Fla. He was a lifetime member of the NRA, the Elks and the Veterans of Foreign War, Military Order of the Cooties. He was a former member of Quaker Hill Rod and Gun Club. He and his late wife, Alice, traveled extensively throughout the United States and overseas. He is survived by his nieces, Margaret Johnson and Vivian Hamilton, both of Kentucky, Karen Jones of Salem, and Margot Robbins of Uncasville; and a nephew, Ernest Fakoury of Fairfax, Va. He also leaves several great nieces and nephews. The family will receive relatives and friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday at the Thomas L. Neilan & Sons Funeral Home, 12 Ocean Ave., New London. A funeral home service will be held 11 a.m. on Saturday. Burial will follow in St. Mary Cemetery, Jefferson Ave., New London.
