Add Memories, Stories & Photos about Harold

Harold Riley was My grandfather , he passed away peacefully after a long courageous and heroic battle with Kidney Cancer. He was a WW2 Veteran who served his country without hesitation and fought all over Europe during this conflict in places like England, Holland, Belgium, France and finally ending his tour in Germany. I had heard at such a young age that my grandfather had caught four German's he came across in a fox hole and they capitulated resulting in their imprisonment i imagine. I was always told that he never liked to discuss his campaign in this last World conflict besides telling family and friends about capturing those four German's and also he was finally wounded in the foot being shot and was asked to become an officer after he was healthier. He declined this offer however that would of made him a Sargent. He was shipped off to an English Red Cross station where he met and fell in Love with my Grandmother Marjorie Taylor Riley from Birmingham, England who was serving or helping to assist nurses during the time my Grandfather was rehabilitating. They moved to the USA after the War and had Three Children. My Grandmother Marjorie was heroic in her own right. She would tell us the horrid stories of the German aerial assaults on English cities and infrastructure. I can always recall one story in particular where she said the family had come back to their house after running for safety in a air raid shelter only to find that their home and all their belongings were destroyed and their Christmas presents were scattered in the treeline. She told me many times how scary and awful the sound was that would warn and let citizens know of an impending aerial bombardment from the German's. It is referred to as their Blitzkrieg effort against the island country of England 1942 i believe.
