  • Introduction

    Harry Edward Swoger was born to Charles and Estelle Wythe Swoger and was married to Edith I. Torrens on August 19th 1941 in Knox County Ohio. Edith died 29 years later on September 4rd 1999 in Newark, Licking County Ohio. Harry was a well known character actor on radio, television and films, having spent the final 10 years of his life in Los Angeles California. He began acting on television at age 40 and appeared in over 100 television shows of which many were westerns. The 1940 Census shows that he was 21 living with his parents, Estella I Parson age 38, and John I Parson age 34 at 258 North Street in Mount Vernon, Knox County, Ohio. It shows that he was working as a paper boy at the time. According to his World War 2 army enlistment record, he enlisted on July 17th 1942 at Fort Hayes Columbus Ohio, had completed four years of high school at the time, was working in the production of glass products at Pittsburgh Plate Glass Co. and was 70" tall and weighed 224 pounds. On Harry's WW2 Draft registration card he listed his next of kin as his mother who lived on N. Main Street in Utica Licking County Ohio.

    The following appeared in The Newark Advocate in Newark Ohio on Monday June 15th 1970: Harry Swoger Funeral arrangements are incomplete for Harry Swoger, 51, who died Sunday night in Valley Emergency Hospital, Van Nuys, California. Mr. Swoger had been in California for 10 years and was well-known as a character actor in radio, television and motion pictures. While a student at Denison University, Mr. Swoger appeared regularly in Denison Summer Theater productions. He is survived by his wife, the former Edith Torrens of Utica.
