Hattley Harrison McDowell Jr is the son of Hattley Harrison McDowell Sr (1894-1951) and Alice Peachy Sanderfer (1902-1992). He served in the United States National Guard during World War II and worked as a salesman in Atlanta, Georgia, USA for the Royal Typewriter Co. Hattley married Angelena Hamby (1923-2003) and the couple had sons VincentMcDowell and Frank McDowell.

Hattley Harrison McDowell enlisted on September 16, 1940 in Memphis Tennessee. He held the rank of Private and his service number was 20410647. He was a member of the National Guard, which included officers, warrant officers, and enlisted men. McDowell was assigned to the Field Artillery branch of the military. During his military service, Private McDowell's unit would have been involved in the training and preparation of troops for combat during World War II. Field artillery units were responsible for providing fire support to infantry and other units on the front lines, using weapons such as howitzers and mortars. McDowell would have received extensive training in the use of these weapons and in tactics such as indirect fire and artillery observation. As a Private, McDowell would have been responsible for carrying out the orders of his superiors and performing a variety of duties as needed. He likely spent a significant amount of time training and drilling with his unit, as well as performing support duties such as maintenance and logistics. After five years of service, Private McDowell was discharged from the military.
