Helen McGregor Duncan was born in 1865 at Sandhurst in Bendigo, Greater Bendigo City County, VIC Australia to John Cowan Duncan and Marion (Lowick) Duncan, and had siblings Frederick Augustus Lowick Duncan and Victoria Helen (Duncan) Hayes. Helen Duncan died at age 30 years old in November 1896, and was buried at Melbourne General Cemetery College Cres, in Parkville, Melbourne City County.

Introduction

The Age. Melbourne. 23rd November 1896. DUNCAN. - The friends of Mrs. MARION DUNCAN, relict of the late Mr. John C. Duncan, late of Bendigo, are respectfully invited to follow the remains of her late beloved daughter, Helen McGregor, to the place of interment, Melbourne General Cemetery. The funeral will leave her residence, 229 Moray-street, South Melbourne, ( Tuesday 24th at 11o'clock. ). JOSIAH HOLDSWORTH. Undertaker and Embalmer 362 Lygon street, Carlton. Telephone 1192.

In 1865, in the year that Helen McGregor Duncan was born, on April 9th, Confederate Army General Robert E. Lee surrendered to the Union Army at Appomattox Court House. Lee's surrender led to a series of surrenders in the Confederacy and in 1866 President Johnson issued a "Proclamation—Declaring that Peace, Order, Tranquility, and Civil Authority Now Exists in and Throughout the Whole of the United States of America".

In 1873, at the age of merely 8 years old, Helen was alive when on September 18th, the New York stock market crash - due to the failure of a number of banks - began the Panic of 1873. After the boom following the Civil War, the Coinage Act of 1873 and other factors led to the market crash. Thus began the "Long Depression" - also called the "Great Depression" until the 1930's.
