  • Obituary

Helen Piovaty passed away unexpectedly on October 31, 2000. Honoring her rich, colorbul life are daughters, Suzan Piovaty of New York City and Karen Piovaty of Tucson; and her son-in-law, Jeffrey Schwartz. Helen was born in 1929, in Prague, Czech Republic. Her childhood was framed by the horrors of WWII. After the war, she pursued a career in design. Her studies at the Textile Institute in Bmo, Czech Republic, were interrupted by the impending fall of the Iron Curtain. At 20, Helen fled to Canada with her former husband, Peter Piovaty, and his parents. For nine years she was a textile designer at Harding Carpets, creatin oriental, floral and abstract designs for home and commercial markets. Subsequently, she joined the family business, Old Country Furniture, in Brantford, Ontario. As the business expanded, they opened Esquire Furniture and Duncan's, a fine gift store. Moving to Tucson in 1974, a new chapter of Helen's life unfolded in her beloved Sonoran desert. Impressed by their roadside service, she joined the Pima County Sheriff's Department as a volunteer. During her 11 years with the organization, Helen was repeatedly recognized for her outstanding dedication and service. She was Volunteer of the Month in 1995, Manager of the Year in 1996, and Volunteer of the Year for Crime Prevention in 1998. "Helenka" will be remembered for her quick wit, compassion, generosity, and timeless sense of style. Her grace and elegance belied a ribald sense of humor. While our hearts are breaking from the loss of our precious mother, we are grateful for her love and her genetic legacy. We appreciate the exceptional and compassionate care Helenka received from the nursing and medical staffs at University Medical Center and the loving support of her companion, Dave Jarvie. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the National World War II Memorial fund, American Battle Monuments Commision, Washington D.C. The family plans a celebration of her life in Tucson on Sunday, November 12. Friends are invited to call Adair Funeral home for more information. A subsequent gathering will be held in Paris, Ontario on a date to be announced. - Arizona Daily Star (Tucson, Arizona) Saturday, November 4, 2000 on page 26.

I have a book by Marcia Davenport
Titled: TOO STRONG FOR FANTASY
I did some accounting work for Helen in 1994 I believe, and this book belonged to her. She shared it with me to read. I believe it had some historical value to her. Periodically, I have tried to locate a way to return it to her or her family. I am thankful that this program appeared a few days after that when I just googled her name again. She was such a kind lady. I would appreciate if you could help me to give this book its proper home.
Thank you,
Respectfully,
Helen Hardin
