LYTE. - Killed in action on the 3rd May, Private Henry Albert Lyte, aged 19 years and 5 months, dearly-beloved nephew of Matilda and Edward Elms, cousin of Edward and Myrtle Elms, of 8 Langridge-street, Alphington. - The golden gates did open wide, - A gentle voice said, Come, and Angels from the other side welcomed our loved Henry home. - Sadly missed, he died for us all.

In 1898, in the year that Henry Albert Lyte was born, on February 15th, the USS Maine exploded and sank in Havana harbor. The reason for the explosion has never been found, but it killed 266 men. "Remember the Maine" became a rallying cry and precipitated the United States' declaration of war on Spain two months later - the beginning of the Spanish-American War. On December 10th, the war ended with the signing of the Treaty of Paris. The Treaty gave the U.S. Puerto Rico, the Philippines, Guam - for $20 million - and, temporarily, Cuba.

In 1900, when he was only 2 years old, the U.S. helped put down Boxer Rebellion. The Boxer Rebellion took place in China, where the presence of "outsiders" (foreigners) was resented. The United States, along with Austria-Hungary, France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Japan, and Russia, had business interests in China and these countries all sent troops to put down the Rebellion and keep China open to their presence and to Christian missionaries.
