He married Elizabeth Jane (Frost) Howchin in 1868, and had children Elizabeth Jane Howchin, Henry Brewster Howchin, Louisa Jane (Howchin) Hatfield, Martha Emily Houchin, Albert Howchin, Alice May Howchin, and Frank Henry Howchin. Henry Howchin died at age 66 years old on May 19, 1913 in Wanaaring, NSW Australia.

The Treaty agreed that the 49th parallel would be the border between the United States and Canada.
