Louisa (Howchin) Zierk of Richmond, City of Yarra County, VIC Australia was born in 1857 in Richmond to Sarah Ann White Howchin and Edward Howchin. She had siblings Emily Howchin Hard, Henry Brewster Howchin, Frank Howchin, and Sarah Ann Howchin. She married Henry Zierk in 1878, and had a child Henry Thomas Zeirk. Louisa Zierk died at age 47 years old in 1904 in Richmond.

In 1857, in the year that Louisa (Howchin) Zierk was born, on March 2nd, the largest slave auction in US history was begun. Called "The Weeping Time", the auction lasted 2 days. Slave owner Pierce M. Butler - who had inherited the slaves 20 years before but was now deeply in debt - sold 436 men, women, children, and infants, all of whom were kept in stalls at a racetrack in Savannah, Georgia. The people were held for weeks before the auction in the horse stalls.

In 1860, by the time she was merely 3 years old, on April 3rd, the Pony Express began its first delivery from St. Joseph, Missouri to Sacramento, California. The trip took 10 days and the riders carried 49 letters, five telegrams, and newspapers for San Francisco and other cities along the way.
