Henry Callow was a publican/hotel keeper. Henry and Maria were married in 1851 after Henry convinced her that her first husband, John Sumner, had been killed in California. This was not true as John Sumner died in 1858 in Port Cygnet. John and Maria had married in 1831 and had three children, Eliza, John William and Catherine. He had been convicted for a second time in 1837 for stealing cattle when they were starving. He was sent to Port Arthur for seven years. He received his Ticket of Leave in 1840. By this time Maria was living with Hotel Keeper, Henry Callow in Hobart with her children. John Sumner claimed his son, John William, sometime after that and left the girls, Eliza and Catherine, with Maria and Henry. They moved to Melbourne where they ran the Royal Mail Hotel in Swanson Street, Melbourne until Henry Callow died in 1854. After Henry’s death Maria subsequently married a publican William Tilke in 1855 and lived with him for two years. He found out that John Sumner was alive and well in Hobart and put Maria out of his establishment. In a 1860 maintenance case, he portrayed Maria in a bad light but fortunately the Judge saw through the tactics of the defence lawyer and found in favour of Maria. Maria then lived with her daughter Eliza (Bartholomew) Steele nee Callow and her granddaughter, Ida Steele.
