Maria was the partner of Henry Callow, a publican/hotel keeper, from the late 1830s until he died in 1854 in Melbourne. Henry Callow and Maria Sumner nee Fitzgerald were married in 1851 after Henry convinced her that her first husband, John Sumner, had been killed in California. This was not true. Her first husband, John Sumner, died in 1858 in Port Cygnet. John and Maria had married in 1831 and had three children, Eliza (b. 1830. m. James Bartholomew in 1864, m. Robert Steele in 1870), John William (b. 1831. m. Susan Meekin/Moore in 1853) and Catherine (b. 1833. m. Edgerton Jacobson Filmore in 1855). John Sumner had been convicted for a second time in 1836 for stealing cattle when his family was starving. He was sent to Port Arthur for seven years. He received his Ticket of Leave in 1840. Prior to her marriage to John Sumner in 1830 Maria had been convicted to domestic service for seven years for being in a group which stole money. She was released when she married John Sumner. By 1840 Maria was living with Hotel Keeper, Henry Callow in Hobart with her children. John Sumner claimed his son, John William, sometime after his release and left the girls, Eliza and Catherine, with Maria and Henry. They moved to Melbourne where they ran the Royal Mail Hotel in Swanson Street, Melbourne until Henry Callow died in 1854. After Henry’s death Maria moved in with Eliza and her husband James Bartholomew at their hotel, the Bull and Mouth in Bourke Street, Melbourne. Maria subsequently married a publican William Tilke in 1855 and lived with him for two years. He found out that John Sumner was alive and well in Hobart and put Maria out of his establishment. In an 1860 maintenance case, he portrayed Maria in a bad light but fortunately the Judge saw through the tactics of the defence lawyer and found in favour of Maria. Maria then lived with her daughter Eliza (Bartholomew) Steele nee (Callow) Sumner and her granddaughter, Ida Steele.
