Henry "Harry" Joseph Smye 1856 - 1941

Henry Joseph Smye of Melbourne Australia was born in 1856 in Melbourne to Joseph Smye and Elizabeth Annie (Hopeton) Smye. He had siblings Annie Frances (Smye) Drysdale, Mary Adelaide (Smye) Grey, Elizabeth Lucy (Smye) Milliken, William Smye, Frederick Smye, Ruth Charlotte (Smye) Pynn, and Harriet (Smye) Phillips. He married Marie Annie (Wohefard Eggers) Smye, and had children Beatrice Smye and Freda (Smye) Twiddy. Henry Smye died at age 85 years old in 1941 in Wedderburn, VIC, and was buried on April 4, 1941 in the Wedderburn Cemetery, Loddon Shire County.

SMYE.- On April 3, at Wedderburn, Harry loved husband of the late Annie, father of Freda, dearly loved brother of Annie, Will ( deceased ), Fred, Harriet, Lizzie ( deceased ), Ruth ( deceased ) and Minnie, aged 85 years. Until the day breaks and the shadows flee away. - Inserted by Harriet and Minnie, 67 Cecil street Fitzroy.

Marines from the ship the USS Decatur, stationed in Elliott Bay, along with about 50 Seattle settlers, fought Native Americans in the area. Territorial Governor Isaac Stevens had declared a "war of extermination" on Native communities 5 days before.
