  • Introduction

    Herbert was born to Harry Heftler (1889 - 1973), born in Austria-Hungary, and Edith Azvoy (1888 - 1993). He had sibling George (2 yrs older than he). Born in New York, New York, by 1920 Herbert lived in New Jersey. By 1958, he lived in Miami FL. He was married to Cleo Una Moore (1924 - 1973), an actress, who he married on October 25, 1961; Monica L. Anderson (who he married on January 7, 1978); and Virginia Prosser (1915 - 1959), with whom he had son Roger H Heftler (1937 - 2015) On his World War II draft card, Herbert stated that he was white, lived in Rutherford New Jersey, unemployed, weighed 135 lbs, had a dark complexion, hazel eyes, and brown hair, and was 5' 8". His next of kin was his wife, Virginia. Herbert was a veteran of World War II, he served with Patton's 3rd Army in Germany and Czechoslovakia. Injured in the War, he was honorably discharged. After World War II, he founded the Heftler Construction Co. to build apartments and homes for returning G.I.'s in NJ. In 1959, he moved the company headquarters to Beverly Hills, California. A very successful businessman/builder, Herbert relocated the headquarters of his company to Miami in 1973, where they remained until the sale of the company in 1994, when he retired.     The following obituary was published in The Herald, Wednesday, January 20m 1999 on page 4B HEFTLER Herbert, 85, a full time resident of Florida for 26 years. (The last 20 in Bal Harbour) coming from Beverly Hills, Calif., passed away Monday. In the late 20's and early 30's, Heftler was a Nationally Ranked Junior Tennis Player. During WWII he served with Patton's Third Army in Germany and Czechoslovakia where he suffered multiple leg fractures in a truck-mine explosion. In 1945, while awaiting an Honorable Discharge, he founded the Heftler Construction Co. to build apartments and homes for returning G.I.'s in NJ. By 1959, Heftler had built in 10 states from coast to coast and relocated his home office to Beverly Hills, CA. He was cited by Time Magazine as "1959 Builder of the Year" when his company led the nation in home sales. He also served on the Advisory Committee to Pres. John F. Kennedy for the Fed.. housing Policy. He entered the Florida Market in 1956 and relocated the headquarters to Miami in 1973 until the sale of the company in 1994. He retired, but remained active in charities including: Mt. Sinai Hospital (Founder), Jackson's Children Memorial Hosp., Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Nation Parkinson's Foundation, Boys Town of Italy, The Children's Resource Fund, and The American Cancer Society. Survivors include his wife of 21 years, Monica of Bal Harbour, son, Roger, and daughter-in-law, Jackie of Boca Raton and grandson, C. Scott Heftler. Memorial services will be held Friday, Jan. 22, at 11 am in the Church By the Sea of Bal Harbour.
