Hilda Hosmer of Coburg, City of Merri-bek County, VIC Australia was born in 1910 in Coburg to Florrie Johnston Hosmer and William Vivian Hosmer. She had siblings William George Hosmer, Walter Cadwallader Hosmer, Benjamin Ernest Hosmer, Daphne Frances Hosmer, Percy Thomas Hosmer, Harold Victor Hosmer, Agnes Hester Hosmer, and May Hosmer. Hilda Hosmer married George Thomas Griffiths in 1930, and died at age 80 years old in 1990 in Coburg.

In 1910, in the year that Hilda Hosmer was born, Halley's comet, which returns past the earth every 75 - 76 years was observed photographically for the first time. Two fortuitous events occurred - photography had been invented since the last time the comet had passed and the comet was relatively close. There was panic because one astronomer claimed that the gas from its tail "would impregnate the atmosphere and possibly snuff out all life on the planet." People bought gas masks, "anti-comet pills" and "anti-comet umbrellas".

In 1928, at the age of 18 years old, Hilda was alive when Mickie Mouse was born! He first appeared in Disney's Steamboat Willie, along with Minnie. Although they were in two previous shorts, this was the first to be distributed. Steamboat Willie took advantage of the new technology and was a "talkie" - music was coordinated with the animation. It became the most popular cartoon of its day.
