Horace Franklin James Morkham 1901 - 1982

Horace Franklin James Morkham was born on January 1, 1901 at At Sea to William Kenneth Morkham and Diana Lenore (Dennis) Morkham, and had siblings Diana Lenore (Morkham) Rhodes and Cynthia Elaine (Morkham) Wilkinson. He married Beatrice A Grindlay in March 1923. He also married Ethel Clarke in 1941 and they later separated. He and Patricia M Stannard married in 1955. Horace Morkham died at age 81 years old in August 1982 in Chichester, West Sussex County, England United Kingdom.

He was married at least three times, with different names for his father on all three marriage certificates. None of the names was ‘William Morkham’, who appears to have been his real father."

Note: It seems that Horace hated his father and blamed him for the premature death of his mother when he was 11 years old, having given predjudicial evidence against him at the coronial inquest into her death. William died of chirrhosis of the liver in following year leaving Horace and his two younger sisters orphaned. Evidently, he refused to use William Morkham's name on his marriage certificates. Horace appears to have been unable to sustain lasting personal relationships possibly due to the trauma he suffered as a boy at the hands of William Morkham who was a disgraced senior civil servant who fled Australia for England and in his final days became an alcoholic. The circumstances of the death of his son Eustace Valentine Morkham at age 16 in 1896 is also suspicious. It was widely reported at the time that he died after accidently shooting himself in the leg with a double barrelled shotgun whilst rabbit hunting, at his father's country retreat, and stepping on a snake. This event occured only after a month after evidence was heard by a 1896 Public Service Board inquiry into corruption in the Public Service, that Valentine was guilty of trading in stamps stolen from the Postal Department of Victoria, of which William Morkham was the Chief Accountant and Controller of Stamps, and passing the proceeds on to his father. William was a wealthy man but when he fled Australia all of his property was left in his wife's name. It appears that they never divorced.
