The Argus (Melbourne, Victoria) Tuesday 8th October 1872 p.4 FAMILY NOTICES DEATHS GOODRICH - On October 16 at a private hospital, Fanny, loving and beloved youngest daughter of the late John and Mary Goodrich of Melbourne, last surviving sister of Emily (Mrs. Morkham). Eliza (Mrs. Terrill) Minnie (Mrs. Corney), and J. Arthur Goodrich, aged 80 years. The Argus (Melbourne, Victoria) Monday 18th October 1943 p.2 CITY OF BOROONDARA MUNICIPAL-WIDE HERITAGE GAP STUDY The terrace row at 209-217 (originally numbered 159-167) Auburn Road was constructed in 1883, for owner Emily Sophia Goodrich Morkham. Situated on land which is part of portion 100 of the Parish of Boroondara, the terraces are at the corner of Auburn Road and Bowler Street (formerly known as Frisch then Urquhart Street). Built as a row of five, the City of Hawthorn’s 1883-84 rate book noted two unfinished houses of £20 Net Annual Value and one of £10. The row was completed the following year, and each of the five brick terraces was initially built comprising seven rooms and valued at £50 each (RB 1884-85). Built across what was originally two parcels of land, Emily Morkham acquired the first block of land in September 1882, and the second in June 1883. In August 1883, the two titles were transferred to Melbourne Mutual Benefit Building Society for about a year, presumably related to financing during the time of construction, and finally both parcels of land were transferred back to Emily Morkham in October 1884 (CT: V1389/F783; V1488/F490). Emily Morkham owned the terrace row until her death in 1912, renting the dwellings to various tenants. Early tenants include a number of retired gentlemen including Augustus Bing and John Evans, and a number of tradespeople including Charles D Aston and Charles J Robinson. Emily Morkham’s husband William Morkham served as an accountant and stamp controller at the General Post Office until 1896, when he was suspended from his duty following a stamps trafficking incident (Age 10 February 1897:5). Even after the accusation, the Morkhams were well provided for, owning quite a lot of properties across the City of Hawthorn and other suburbs under Emily Morkham’s name. The Morkhams themselves resided at a large property named ‘Christowell’, off Riversdale Road in Camberwell. Erected on a large lot, ‘Christowell’ was a substantial two-storey brick house of 16 rooms, accompanied by weatherboard outbuildings at its rear (RB; Argus 25 November 1896:1). At the time of Emily’s death in 1912 her estate was valued at a £10,368, including £3,688 worth of real estate, indicating the considerable wealth of the family (PROV). The residence is now lost, with the land being subdivided to form Christowell Street, off Riversdale Road, and surrounding lots (Age 27 November 1913:2; Age 27 July 1915:9). EMIGRATION Travelled from England to Australia with her father John Goodrich when she was 6 years old (c.1854) (Aldwyn Thomas Swales) TRAVEL NOTES 1. A Mrs. E. Morkham, a former Australian Civil Servant, stated that his wife became ill and died a week later. He thought she was suffering from pneumonia, but did not call in a doctor as she did not want him to. He denied striking her. A son, aged about eleven, said that on Derby Day he saw his father, while walking behind his mother in the garden, strike her on the back with a poker, causing her to fall. Evidence was given by the police as to intervening in drunken quarrels between Mr. and Mrs. Morkham. The medical evidence was that the cause of death could not be stated, and the inquest was adjourned for an analysis of the stomach. (National Advocate (Bathurst, NSW) Friday 26th July 1912 p.1) NOTES FROM LONDON (From our Special Representative.) London, June 21. Mystery surrounds the death of Diana Morkham, the wife of William K. Morkham, a former Australian civil servant, now living in Surrey. Deceased, who at one time; was a well-known professional singer, was a Spaniard, according to the husband, who told the coroner at the inquest that he thought she was suffering from pneumonia, but did not call in medical aid. She died within a week of falling ill. Deceased's son, who is 11 years old, however, stated that he saw his father walk behind his mother in the garden, and strike her on the back with a poker, causing her to fall. It appears that there were quarrels between the couple, and the police had on occasions been called in. As medical evidence could throw no light on the cause of death, the inquest has been adjourned, and investigations are being made. Kalgoorlie Western Argus (WA) Tuesday 30th July 1912 p.1

BIRTH RECORD Victorian Register of Births, Death & Marriages Registration Number: 3014/1880 FAMILY NOTICES BIRTHS MORKHAM. - On the 17th inst., at her residence, Riversdale-road, East Camberwell, the wife of William Morkham of a son. The Argus (Melbourne, Victoria) Tuesday 20th January 1880 p.1 DEATH RECORD Victorian Register of Births, Death & Marriages Registration Number: 12622/1896 Age at Death: 16 A LAD'S TERRIBLE DEATH THRILLING ADVENTURE WITH SNAKE AND GUN SUCCOR BROUGHT BY A DOG A bush adventure of an uncommonly touching character, in connection with which a lad: named Valentine Morkham,16 years, son of Mr. William Morkham, of the Postal department, Melbourne, underwent a terrible ordeal, has been attended with a fatal termination. Young Morkham had left his home at Camberwell on Saturday morning with the intention of spending a few weeks on his father's farm at Yarra Glen. Arriving there he passed the afternoon in the company of the overseer, Mr. Thomas Walker, who was the only other person on the homestead. On arising the following morning Walker, who was going to a neighbouring farm asked the lad whether he would care to accompany him: but the latter excused himself on the ground that the weather was too hot, and the overseer went, by himself. Returning home late on Sunday evening, he found Morkham's door locked. Thinking he had retired to rest, Walker himself went to bed. On arising next day, however, he was unable to get any answer to repeated knockings, and burst in the door. Then he found to his astonishment that the bed had not been occupied, and young Morkham was nowhere to be seen. A dog belonging to the homestead was also missing. Walker strolled into the bush a little distance, and whistled loudly in the hope that the dog might be attracted towards him, and sure enough after a time the dog made its appearance. The behavior of the animal when it came up to him was so extraordinary that the overseer felt convinced that something was wrong. By its constant sharp barking and excited short runs in the direction whence it had come the animal conveyed to the overseer as plainly as could be done without the spoken word that some disaster had happened to the lad, and accordingly he started walking in the direction the dog had took. The animal commenced jumping and barking as if overjoyed to find itself understood. After a walk through the bush of The Dividing Range they came upon a shaded spot on the banks of the Yea River, about a mile from the homestead, where the missing youth was found in a fearful condition. In his right thigh was a gaping wound, which had become fly-blown, while the excessive heat and loss of blood had added ten-fold to his torture. Though still suffering intense pain, young Morkham was quite conscious and explained that after Walker left the homestead on Sunday morning, he decided to go rabbit shooting and setting out with the dog had reached the spot where he was found, when he trod upon a snake. The reptile raised its head menacingly, and fearing a bite, Morkham acting on the spur of the moment, struck at it with the butt of his gun. It would appear that either through lack of acquaintance with guns or through thoughtlessness, he was carrying the weapon at full c***, for directly the butt struck the ground both barrels of the weapon were discharged at close range into his thigh. He was rendered insensible at once, but recovered consciousness about daybreak on Monday morning, when he found the faithful dog sitting by his side. The animal had remained with him until the sound of the overseer whistling was heard when he started off to answer it, and a little while afterwards returned to the spot, bringing the overseer with him. The services of Dr. Kilpatrick, of Lillydale, were soon obtained; and late on Monday evening Mr. and Mrs. Morkham and Dr. Soilleaux, of Camberwell, visited Yarra Glen, and conveyed the sufferer to his home at Camberwell. On Tuesday the lad was examined, and it being apparent that the only hope of saving his life was by amputation of the injured limb, that operation was successfully performed by Dr. Charles Ryan, assisted by Dr. Soilleaux and Dr. Moore. The unfortunate youth rallied somewhat after the operation but about 5 p.m. fell into a very low state, and gradually sinking expired at 7 o'clock on Wednesday evening. CANDLER The coroner for Bourke investigated at Camberwell the circumstances of the death of Master Eustace Valentine Morkham, 16 years of age, whose death from the effects of a gunshot would have been reported in “The Argus.” The evidence of Mr. Thomas Walker, of Kinglake, corroborated the details already published, and showed further that the deceased had on several previous occasions used the gun with which he accidentally shot himself. Mr. William Morkham, father of the deceased, having given formal testimony, the jury returned the verdict, “That the deceased died from the effects of a gunshot wound caused by the gun exploding accidentally, when the deceased was endeavouring to kill a snake. MARRIAGE RECORD Victorian Register of Births, Death & Marriages Registration Number: 4504/1872 FAMILY NOTICES MARRIAGE MORKHAM-GOODRICH. - On the 5th inst. by the Rev. James Martin, B A., William, son of William Morkham, of Geelong, to Emily Sophia, eldest daughter of the late John Goodrich.

He was married at least three times, with different names for his father on all three marriage certificates. None of the names was ‘William Morkham’, who appears to have been his real father." Note: It seems that Horace hated his father and blamed him for the premature death of his mother when he was 11 years old, having given predjudicial evidence against him at the coronial inquest into her death. William died of chirrhosis of the liver in following year leaving Horace and his two younger sisters orphaned. Evidently, he refused to use William Morkham's name on his marriage certificates. Horace appears to have been unable to sustain lasting personal relationships possibly due to the trauma he suffered as a boy at the hands of William Morkham who was a disgraced senior civil servant who fled Australia for England and in his final days became an alcoholic. The circumstances of the death of his son Eustace Valentine Morkham at age 16 in 1896 is also suspicious. It was widely reported at the time that he died after accidently shooting himself in the leg with a double barrelled shotgun whilst rabbit hunting, at his father's country retreat, and stepping on a snake. This event occured only after a month after evidence was heard by a 1896 Public Service Board inquiry into corruption in the Public Service, that Valentine was guilty of trading in stamps stolen from the Postal Department of Victoria, of which William Morkham was the Chief Accountant and Controller of Stamps, and passing the proceeds on to his father. William was a wealthy man but when he fled Australia all of his property was left in his wife's name. It appears that they never divorced.
