Horatio Millard died at age 51 years old on May 2, 1884 at The Insane Hospital in Independence, Buchanan County, IA, and was buried in Boone, Boone County.

    Horatio was a farmer for many years of his life. After attending Seminary school, his profession was that of a Baptist Minister in many congregations in Iowa. Per "The History of Cedar County Iowa, containing a history of the county..." page 499: "Rev. H.N. Millard, the present Pastor, was chosen to that office Sept. 1, 1875..." Referring to the the First Baptist Church in Mechanicsville, Iowa that was organized January 1, 1868... Per "Historical Sketches of Iowa Baptists" by SH Mitchell, page 263: in 1878 Rev. H.N. Millard "resigned in Mechanicsville".... Per 'History of Boone, Co., Iowa, Volume 1: "...Between December 1878 and to October 1882, HN was Pastor at the church in Boonesboro, Iowa"...no one replace him until 1883.. Per the 1879 "Baptist Home Mission Monthly, Volumes 1-2, page 90: Rev. H.N. Millard writes from Boone that the present outlook is more encouraging than at any time during his pastorate... "January 20th began meetings at one of my outstations, four miles north of Boone, and continued three weeks, upwards of 20 professing conversion. February 17th commenced meetings at Boone and continued nearly three weeks. Four professed conversion, and the church was greatly revived. Seven have been received for baptism, and others will be soon. March 1st we made the last payment of $200 on our church edifice, purchased from the Presbyterians. The Sunday school is prospering, with an average attendance at present of ninety."     Horatio was married to his first wife, Jemima Mary Winne, in 1852 in Glenn, NY. They had 8 children together prior to her death in 1863. Horatio then married a neighbor, Marcia Farnsworth, 6 months later. Marcia and Horatio had 9 children together. Per "Historical Sketches of Boone, Iowa" page 502: "Rev. H. N. Millard died in the Hospital at Independence, May 2nd, 1884. He was born in the state of New York, February 16, 1833. He came to Iowa in 1853, and was afterwards converted and joined the Baptist church at Comanche. He was ordained March 26, 1872, and settled as pastor of the church at Lyons, where he served two years, followed by three years at Mechanicsville. "Here his ministry was blessed to the conversion of over 20 souls." He was pastor next at Boone, Iowa, nearly four years, and over fifty were baptized. For the last year and a half of his ministry he was pastor of the Mt. Pleasant and Pilot Mound Churches, and Missionary of the Convention. He was a "good minister of Jesus Christ," kind and loving, and pure in heart and life. "Greatly loved by all classes, and especially by the young." Millard, formerly pastor of the Baptist Church in Boone, and who a year ago purchased a farm in the vicinity of Boone, has utterly broken down in mind. It is thought by some that financial trouble had much to do in causing his affliction. Jackson Sentinel, May 15, 1884 Jackson Sentinel, Maquoketa, Iowa May 15, 1884. page 4: "Death of Rev. H. N. Millard- Rev. H. N. Millard, many years a former resident of Jackson County, and at one time the Pastor of the Baptist Church of Lyons, Clinton County, died at the Insane Hospital on May 2nd. His remains were taken to Boone, Iowa and interred in the presence of his wife and thirteen children and a large concourse of friends. He was 51 years of age. All old acquaintances in Jackson County deeply regret his mental misfortune and death." Clinton-Jackson-Boone County IA Archives Obituaries.....Millard, Rev. H. N. May 2, 1884 File at: From Nevada Representative May 7, 1884: “The Rev. Mr. Millard, who has for several years been the esteemed pastor of the Baptist society in Boone, died last Wednesday at the insane asylum at Independence whither he had recently been taken for treatment.” Died in Independence, Buchanan Co., Iowa but was buried in Boone Co., Iowa (per "Burial Records Boone County Vol. 1-4, page 318, cemetery 51). Believe his family living in Clarinda, Page Co., Iowa at time of his death in Independence. Name: (Rev.) H.
