1835 - 1863 World Events

In 1835, in the year that Jemima Mary (Winne) Millard was born, on January 8th, the U.S. Federal Government declared that President Andrew Jackson had paid off the national debt - for the first and only time.

In 1840, she was merely 5 years old when on May 7th, the Great Natchez Tornado hit Mississippi. Around 2p, the second deadliest tornado in U.S. history hit Natchez and the surrounding area. It has been estimated to be a F4 or F5 storm and over 317 people were killed - 109 were injured.

In 1847, when she was merely 12 years old, on May 7th, In Philadelphia, an association of physicians and medical students was founded - the American Medical Association or AMA. The association, the first of its kind, wanted to create uniform standards for medical training, education, and practices.

In 1854, when she was 19 years old, the fashion house Louis Vuitton was founded in Paris by Louis Vuitton Malletier. Beginning with trunks - and soon new ingenious flat topped trunks that could be stacked - the company now produces trunks and leather goods as well as clothing, watches, shoes, jewelry, sunglasses, books and other accessories.

In 1863, in the year of Jemima Mary (Winne) Millard's passing, in January, British scientist John Tyndall proved the greenhouse effect - which had been widely theorized, but not proven, by scientists.
