  • Introduction

I never met Hugh but I know of him through my father Robert M. Rowe, if Ithis is the correct Hugh L. Coleman, he and my father were in a motorcycle accident in Sudbury Mass. in 1944. I think he and my father lost touch after the accident. My father was in the hospital in a coma for 9 days but did go on to recover and he did go back to college and got his degree in optometry. He practiced for many years in Mass. From what my father said, Hugh was never able to go back to school to complete his degree. I hope that he had a successful life. My father said that his arm was badly injured in the accident. I am sorry to see that he has since died. It would have been nice to be able o reunite them. My father lives in Northborough, Ma. which is the next town to Marlborough where he grew up. I hope his family is well. Lynne (Rowe) Derosier. (bob Rowe's daughter)

In 1924, in the year that Hugh L Coleman was born, Macy's department store in New York held its first "Thanksgiving parade" on November 27th at 9a - during church services but leaving plenty of time to attend the big football game between Syracuse and Columbia universities. The parade was held as a way to promote the opening of the “World’s Largest Store” and its 1 million square feet of retail space in Manhattan’s Herald Square. The parade was 6 miles long and included floats, Macy's employees dressed as clowns, cowboys, and sword-wielding knights, and animals from Central Park Zoo. Santa Claus, of course, brought up the rear - opening the Christmas shopping season for Macy's.
