He had siblings Florence May Brereton, Daisy Brereton, Sarah Ellen (Brereton) Morgan, Ethel Mary Brereton, Myrtle Evelyn Brereton, Lily Brereton, Leslie George Brereton, Bertha Grace Brereton, and Edwin Charles Brereton. Hugh Brereton married Lillian May Bolden in 1928, and died at age 92 years old on January 19, 1997 in Hallam.

The Roosevelt administration and scientists eventually determined that farming practices had caused the conditions that led to the dust storms and the changes they implemented in farming stopped the Dust Bowl.
