Ian Matthew Mastel, son of Patrick and Peggy (Ziegler) Mastel, was born February 24, 1993 at Grand Forks, ND. When Ian was three years old he moved with his family to Sioux Falls where he attended Holy Family Preschool and then St. Lambert's School through the sixth grade. Ian was currently a member of the 8th grade class at O'Gorman Junior High School. Ian was a brilliant young man who was a Presidential Scholar in 6th grade and was on the Honor Roll at O'Gorman each quarter. He excelled in math and science and had dreams of attending the Air Force Academy and becoming a fighter pilot.
Ian was musically gifted and began playing piano in the 2nd grade. His piano instructor was always amazed that her cat would always come out when Ian and Shannon arrived for lessons and that the cat would jump up on the piano and start "talking" to Ian. Ian also played trombone and was in the Sioux Empire Youth Orchestra. He was looking forward to playing in jazz band. Recently he had become a member of the Dakota Pipe and Drums where he played the bagpipes in parades and other public functions. Ian was proud of his accomplishments and could be seen practicing outside his home with his kilt and Glengarry on.
Ian loved sports and other physical activities. He played T-ball, baseball, and Y basketball, as well as snowboarding, indoor soccer, and horseback riding. His latest obsession was playing paintball with his friends.
Above all, Ian will be remembered for his faith in God, his keen sense of humor, and the fact that he made a difference in all the lives that he touched. God Bless His Memory.
Grateful for having shared his life are his parents; Patrick and Peggy Mastel, Sioux Falls, SD; his sister, Shannon Mastel, Sioux Falls, SD; grandmothers, Ann Ziegler, Denver, CO and Mary Mastel, Hazelton, ND; aunts and uncles, Jonnye Mastel, Seattle, WA, Paula (Jim) Hughes, Bismarck, ND, Dennis Ziegler, Santa Fe, NM, Michael Ziegler, Long Beach, CA, Larry (Rhoda) Ziegler, Cedaredge, CO, Mark (Jan) Ziegler, Broomfield, CO, Conrad (Anna) Ziegler, Denver, CO, Kay Ziegler, Phoenix, AZ, Ken (Sara) Ziegler, San Diego, CA, Roger (Kelli) Ziegler, Scottsdale, AZ, Jane (Mark) Becker, Denver, CO; and many cousins.
