He married Mamie Lee (Ricketts) Harris on April 19, 1919 in Danville and they later divorced on June 26, 1942 in Danville. They had children Captola Faye Harris Davis, Chyle Hawkins Harris, Ida Warren Harris Pickrel, Ruth Harris McCall, and Amy Pearl (Harris) Fern. He also married Ruby Martha (Baugher) Harris on December 31, 1942 in Danville, and they were married until Ira's death on December 11, 1958 in Danville.

    Rites Scheduled For Retired City Policeman Funeral services for Ira Harden Harris, a retired member of the Danville Police Department, will be held at 2 p, m. tomorrow from Moseley Memorial Methodist Church. Graveside services will be conducted in Highland Burial Park by Ramah Masonic Lodge. Mr. Harris, a veteran of 34 years' service with the local. police force, died following a heart attack suffered while shoveling snow in the back yard of his home at 643 Jefferson St. yesterday. He was rushed to Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival. He had been curtailed in his activities since a previous heart attack three years ago. A native of Ringgold, deceased was born August 28, 1894, and was a son of Edward L. and Ida Bell Warren Harris. He spent most of his life here and held the rank of lieutenant when he retired from the police force four years ago. Mr. Harris was a member of Moseley Memorial Church, Ramah Lodge and the Danville Consistory of Scottish Rites. He was a veteran of World War I. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Ruby Baugher Harris; and the following sons and daughters: Mrs. John T. Davis of the Mt. Cross Rd.; Mrs. Ida Rakes of Martinsville; Mrs. William McCall, Mrs. Edgar Fern and Chyle H. Harris, all of Danville. He also leaves the following brothers and sisters: W. H. Harris of Newport News; Henry Harris of Detroit: Mrs. R. F. Reid of Greenville, S.C.; Mrs. Anderson Abbott of Danville; and Mrs. B. F. Evans of Roseville, Mich. Nine grandchildren also survive. The body is resting at Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home.

In 1903, he was only 10 years old when the Harley-Davidson Motor Company was begun by two childhood friends, William Harley and Arthur Davidson - with help from Arthur's brother, Walter. Their first prototype - a "motor-bicycle" - couldn't climb hills without also pedaling, so they went back to the drawing board, and in 1904 their new version came in 4th in a race. Harley-Davidson and Indian Motorcycle Manufacturing Company were the only two major motorcycle companies to survive the Great Depression.
