In 1890, in the year that Irene Halbur was born, on January 2nd, Alice Sanger became the first female staffer to work in the White House. She was hired as a stenographer and, as such, took dictation.

In 1902, by the time she was only 12 years old, the world famous Italian tenor, Enrico Caruso, made the first gramophone recording by a popular singer. Accompanied by only a piano, his voice recordings became a big seller and did much to popularize the new-fangled gramophone. He had to sing into a metal "horn" that relayed his voice to a metal disc. And the songs had to be under 4 and a half minutes!

Our Beloved Friends and Playmates - Dolls!
Who was your closest friend in childhood? It may have been a brother, sister, cousin, or neighbor - but if you were a girl, your toy dolls might have ranked towards the top. Do some of these doll photos remind you of your dolls? Or, do you find them somewhat scary, spooky, and creepy? If you don't like them today, one thing is for sure...you would have loved all of them growing up!
